Material Detectives!

Exploring and Investigating!

We’ve been having so much fun in our science and topic lessons this week! Our classrooms have been filled with materials everywhere as we’ve been exploring and investigating lots of different objects.

We’ve learnt the difference between an object, the material it’s made from, and the properties that make it special. We also discovered that some materials are man-made while others are natural and that some natural materials can even be changed into man-made objects! We were amazed to find out that some natural materials, like wood, cotton or wool, can be turned into man-made objects such as furniture, clothes and even paper!

We loved being hands-on scientists; holding, bending, stretching and feeling the materials as we described their properties. We asked questions like “Is it bendy?”, “Is it hard?”, “Is it shiny?”

Why not continue our Materials Everywhere learning at home? You could play a fun game together — you name an object, and your child can tell you:

  1. What the object is

  2. What material it’s made from

  3. What its properties are — for example, hard, soft, bendy, shiny, rough, smooth, or waterproof!
