Practical Area

Today, we learned that area is the amount of space a closed 2D shape covers. To investigate this, we used Post-it notes, Dienes, and cubes as non-standard units to measure and compare the area of different shapes. Through our investigations, we discovered that the greater the number of units needed to cover a shape, the larger its area. We also began to discuss why using standard units of measurement helps us to compare areas more accurately.
