Microbits and School of Noise!
Today, year 4 took part in a micro:bit workshop. A micro:bit is a small computer that we can code to do different things. During the workshop, we learnt how to write simple code to make the micro:bit work, such as lighting up the LEDs, showing messages and using buttons. We practised important skills like problem-solving, teamwork and perseverance as we tested our code and fixed any mistakes. It was exciting to see our code work on the micro:bits, and we learnt how coding can be used in real life to control technology and solve problems.
We then had an amazing workshop with school of noise! We explored the science of sound and how it is used in different ways around the world. We learnt about sound design for electric cars and films, how sound can help put out fires, and how it is used when designing buildings. We found out how sounds are made through vibrations and learnt about pitch and volume. We also learnt how sound travels and what happens when it reaches our ears, including how it can be absorbed or reflected. We had lots of fun experimenting with different equipment, including Chladni plates where sand makes patterns using vibrations, musical instruments like a theremin and an omnichord, tuning forks, and a model of a human ear. We even used fruits and vegetables to create musical sounds when we touched them!
