Preparing for the ball...
I am learning to write a sentence.
This week we have been making wishes. We have discussed, drawn and written about what we would wish for if we had a Fairy Godmother like Cinderella had. We have made a variety of wishes, from money to buy sweets to a pink dress and blue tractor. At home you could dictate a simple sentence for your child to sound out and write or help them write a sentence of their choice.
I am learning to double.
This week we have learnt about doubling numbers. We started the week by looking at ‘double’ images such as a double deck bus and a double pram. We have taught the children that when you double you have the same number twice. We have used pictures such as a ladybird to show that a number needs to be the same on both sides. We have then used our adding skills to add the two same numbers together.
I am learning to use different materials.
We have had a strong focus this week on art and craft activities. The children have been involved in designing and making their own crowns, they have made a large carriage for our role-play area out of boxes and they have used paper plates to create their own Cinderella carriages.
I am learning to compare characters.
We have read the story of Cinderella this week and have spoken in detail about the different characters. We started by looking at Cinderella and saying how she is a kind and caring person, we then spoke about and compared her to the characters of the stepsisters. We have discussed why Cinderella deserved to have special treats from the fairy godmother.
I am learning to add.
This week we have gone back to addition. We firstly recapped our learning from previous weeks by adding two groups together. We then moved onto counting on from the first number. We started by using resources to help us count on and now we are drawing dots under the second number and crossing them off as we count forwards.
I am learning to balance.
This week we have been doing different balances. We have tried some on our own and some with our partners. We were even able to come up with some of our own. The children really enjoyed PE this week and did very well with getting changed!
Thor returned to the classroom this week after a short holiday. We were all so shocked at how much he has grown. Most of us have a little hold.
I am learning to describe characters.
This week we have read the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We have looked at the characters of Little Red and the wolf and described their appearance and personalities. We have also written sentences about what Red could have in her basket.
I am learning to subtract by counting back.
This week we have been learning to subtract by counting back. In order to do this we have taught the children to hold the largest number in their head. They draw dots under the smaller number. They then tap their head and say the largest number and count back one number each time they cross a dot out. The number they say as they cross the last dot out is the answer. You may like to practise this at home.
On Thursday it was world book day. Thank you so much for dressing your child up as a book character, they looked fantastic. We all had a great day! The children all confidently told their friends about who they had chosen to dress up as and about their favourite book. They then drew a picture of their favourite character and wrote about them independently. At home you could encourage your child to write a sentence independently, listening for the sounds they can hear.
