On Tuesday we talked about the history of pancake day and why we have it. The children shared their family traditions, knowledge about pancakes and preferences. I was very suprised how many of the children could explain exactly how to make them in great detail. The children were also able to have a little pancake taster session in the afternoon.
I am learning to subtract.
Before half term we started learning how to subtract. We have continued subtracting this week and we are all really good at knowing that subtraction means taking objects and numbers away. Some of us have started counting backwards as a method of subtracting and we have also looked at solving subtraction problems.
I am learning about food from other cultures.
As a way of experiencing other cultures, the children were given the opportunity to try and taste Chinese food. They have also created some of their own plates of chinese food using different resources around the classroom e.g. wool for noodles.
I am learning to hear and write the sounds in words.
This week we have read and watched the film 'The Magic Paintbrush. We then wrote a sentence stating what we would paint if we had a magic paintbrush. The children were clearly hungry as most sentences included some sort of food.
I am learning to subtract.
This week we have been learning that subtraction means take away. We have talked through some subtraction problems with the children and used real objects to solve the problems e.g. we had 5 spring rolls and 3 were eaten, so we need to subtract 3 from 5. The children would do this and tell the grown up how many were left.
Superhero!
I am learning to use time to compare.
This week we have been learning about time. We have used sand timers in our choosing time, to see how long things take us. We have also completed different activities within set times e.g. how many times we can write our name in 30 seconds. We then compared our results with our friends. At home you could have your own time challenges e.g. how long does it take to put on your shoes? Can you do it quicker next time?
I am learning to write for different purposes.
We are trying to encourage the children to choose to write in a variety of ways and for different purposes e.g. write lists, label objects and make posters. This week we have been learning about chinese new year. We have written a list of the animals from the chinese calendar. The Children also had a go at writing their name in chinese letters. You could try getting your child to help you write your shopping list. They could help you listen for the sounds in some tricky words and have a go at writing some simple words.
I am learning how to take photos and videos using the i pads.
This week the children have enjoyed dressing up as Superheroes, taking pictures and making superhero video clips. They were taught how to take photos and videos and in some instances how to add special effects.
Thank you so much for all your hard work with this topics Love to Learn. You have completed your mission in transforming your children into superheroes today with your super creations. We have all had a super day doing many super things :)
I am learning to add.
This week we have learnt the symbols + and = and what they mean. We have had a go at solving number sentences given to us by either using Numicon or drawing the right number of circles under each number and counting how many altogether. You could try giving your child some number sentences at home and helping them to solve them.
