English and RWI

An overview ...

To maximise learning and impact in English I have split the children into separate English groups based upon ability. Some children will be with me completing a text based approach to English, other children will be completing the Read Write Inc programme begun in Year 1 with Miss Spurrier, Mrs Ivan and Miss Beal. We believe it is very important for the children to complete this programme, which is all done at their own learning pace, so as not to miss vital sounds taught by the scheme.

English

In English this week, the children have been reading our first text: The Crunching, Munching Caterpillar.  They have been exploring the text and have completed some drama activities taking on the role of the characters in the story. This term they will also be exploring the non-fiction text, How Bees Make Honey, linked with our first IPC topic.

When reading at home, you could take on the role of the characters in the story you are reading and retell the story using drama and role play.

Read Write Inc:

RWI has had a huge impact on the reading and writing of children in Year 2. As a new teacher to the school, it is lovely to see the children so engaged with the scheme and it paying dividends in both their reading and their writing.  Thank you for your continued support with this at home. It is great to hear that families are using their phonics packs and encouraging their children to segment and blend sounds together to make words!

This year we are beginning to introduce cursive writing to some of the children in Year 2. When they can confidently form their letters accurately, we encourage them to join with ‘lead outs’. This is very new to the children so you may notice them experimenting with different styles! Please ask if you have any questions.
