This week is literacy week and all our activities will be based around the book 'The Island'. When the people of the Island discover a man and a tattered raft on their beach, they’re not sure what to do. Who is he? Will he harm them? They don’t want to take him in – but they can’t send him back to the sea, where he’s sure to die. So they lock him up in a goat pen. But even there, is he still a threat to them…? This is a chilling and wonderfully illustrated tale of prejudice and fear, which explores topical themes of racism and refugees.
We read the poem 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes. It contained some really tricky vocab so we worked in groups to use dictionaries and the internet to find the meanings of the words! Here are some examples: breeches, claret velvet, rapier, casement, galleon, torrent. Why don't you ask us what they mean!

We wrote our own playscripts based on part of the book Ice Trap where the ship has been trapped by the ice floes and the crew are stuck on the ship. Look at the photos to see how we got on.
We have been learning about fractions and decimals in maths. We sat back to back and had to describe decimal numbers to our partner who then had to write it down as a fraction. For example: 'It has no ones, 3 tenths and 6 hundredths..' The answer is 0.36 or 36/100. Why don't you play a game at home?!
