Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

This week, as a precursor to our new topic 'World at War', we read the book, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas'...

Although it is a sombre book about an emotive issue, it was read and discussed with due care. We felt that it was important to read this book to provide background to the issues that will be covered in our WW2-based topic. We have a couple of lessons set aside during the topic that will explore the Holocaust in further detail.

The themes in the book can be upsetting, but provide an accessible entry point to a serious event from history. It has already been made explicit to the children that the only reason why we look at this text and the topic of the Holocaust is to raise awareness of this dark moment in Europe's history, so that we all work together to ensure that it can never happen again.

If you have any questions about the book or the topic, please feel free to contact us.
