Wildlife Learning at RAPS

The world of plants is blooming fun learning for children at Ramsgate Arts Primary.

To reinforce their classroom work, the Year 3 group visited Monkton Nature Reserve to explore the centre and observe plant and animal life at close quarters.

They spotted some of the plant processes they have been studying, including pollen being transported by bees and seed heads on both dandelions and thistles.

The pupils were enthralled when they had the opportunity to watch bird life through the reserve’s binoculars, enabling them to see the tiniest details and colours.

A trip to the site museum offered a chance to revisit previous learning from earlier this school year when they learnt about Stone Age flint tools and Bronze Age burials.

Assistant Head of School Kiki Amin said: “Our children have enjoyed learning about the different parts of a plant and flowers and about the function of the leaves, roots and stems.

“They have been growing their own plants too, including sunflowers which they will be planting with the help of the Year 2 classes.”

As part of their learning they showed their creative skills with an Art to Start task inspired by arts and crafts supremo William Morris. The work was of a high standard and was displayed in school, including 3D flowers that the Year 3 ‘nurture group’ are currently working on.

Miss Amin added: “Having such a brilliant resource as Monkton Nature Reserve so close to school is a real asset – our visit helped give our children’s learning a new dimension.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
