A Window on RAPS’ Talented Young Artists

Creative children from Ramsgate Arts Primary are playing a colourful part in the town’s festive celebrations.

They were invited to decorate the windows of the Seabird restaurant in Addington Street as part of the Ramsgate Living Advent Calendar initiative. This is an annual event that runs each December and raises funds for the Salvation Army shelter support for the homeless.

Each year, residents and businesses become 'hosts' for their advent door, window, porch or front garden. Each day or evening you can visit a 'door' where there may be community events to enjoy such as carol singing and can make donations.

Ten children from Years 5 and 6 were selected to take part with each chosen for their commitment, talent, and enthusiasm in art lessons.

Teacher Kelly-Ann Smith explained: “When exploring different design ideas, we chose a winter-wonderland theme with a twist. The restaurant is called Seabird, so we wanted to weave a bird motif into the installation—something subtle that reflected the identity of the venue. This inspired the story of a winter owl and the journey he makes towards Christmas.

“Our owl first appears alone, standing outside in the cold. He then travels across land, rivers, and mountains until he finally reaches a home filled with festive cheer, food, and warmth. In the final window, the owl is welcomed into the heart of the festive season, nestled inside the Christmas tree.

“Owls can symbolise many things, but for us this owl represents the idea that no one should be alone at Christmas. Even in the most challenging circumstances, there is always hope of finding a home and a place of belonging—something many people seek during the festive season.”

The children created the artwork using their own hand-drawn illustrations in acrylic paint marker pens. Above their drawings hang delicate snowflakes, echoing the original winter-wonderland idea.

Kelly added: “The installation was a real success. The children were professional, enthusiastic, and worked incredibly hard to bring their artwork to life. They were open to adapting ideas and adjusting to a new environment. I am immensely proud of them and of the work they have created for the whole Ramsgate community to enjoy.”

Head of School Nick Budge said: “We are always keen to play a role within our town as part of our community connections.

“Our installation is part of a welcoming project for the people of the town to enjoy in the run-up to Christmas – we are happy to be a part of it and to support the Salvation Army’s fundraising to help the homeless.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
