Christmas Creativity with RAPS’ Rag Wreaths

The special community spirit of Christmas was enhanced at Ramsgate Arts Primary School when parents and carers joined children to create a unique festive decoration.

The school’s annual ‘rag wreath’ workshop is a popular part of the run up to Christmas that encourages artistic interpretations to blossom.

Art teacher Kelly-Ann Smith explained: “This workshop is always free and is offered to our parent community as a special opportunity for quality bonding time. It’s a wonderful way for parents, carers, and children to come together to celebrate the festive period, often using recycled Christmas decorations and materials. Every year the event is a huge success because families love coming together to create their masterpieces. I am always blown away by the generosity of our parent community, who frequently donate materials for us to use. The children adore making these wreaths, and seeing them displayed at the heart of our school fills them with a real sense of pride. I love the kitsch, home-made charm these wreaths bring. They teach our children that you don’t need to spend lots of money on decorations, there is far more satisfaction in making something by hand with a loved one.”

As is tradition, the wreaths are displayed in the school office area throughout the season, before the children proudly take their creations home on the last day of term.

Head of School Nick Budge said: “We are all about encouraging people to explore their creative talents. The RAPS rag wreaths are just one of many initiatives and projects throughout the year that give our pupils full rein to use their imaginations in an artistic setting. The school reception area looks sparkly and colourful thanks to their efforts.”

Ramsgate Arts Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with its partner schools Chilton Primary in Ramsgate and Upton Juniors in Broadstairs.
