One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4

Year 4 Curriculum – Summer Term 2018

Morning Routine

In Year 4, we encourage the children to be independent. Please continue to say goodbye to your child either before they enter the school or at our classroom door and encourage them to complete their morning routines as instructed.

We do not check the children’s book bags every day, so please give any letters/dinner money directly to us in the morning, either to myself or Ms Vine, and remind your child that they need to change their own reading book. It is vital that this is done daily if they are not using Bug Club or reading their own text at home. Please ensure that their reading is logged in their Reading Record.

At RAPS, our English curriculum is based around a core text. The children will share the book together in Guided Reading sessions and will complete written tasks linked to this, specific to a particular genre. Our focus this term will be based around diary entries and different viewpoints. Other skills to be developed include maintaining person and tense, using openers and connectives to link ideas or establish chronology and developing our use of paragraphs where appropriate.

Maths will be taught in blocks that focus on different areas of learning. These blocks vary in length. There is a focus on daily Mathematics and this can be taught through both practical activities and within a more formal classroom setting. This term, we will be revisiting number and place value, exploring the different numeration systems, consolidating our knowledge of the four main operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and revisiting fractions and decimals. Please take the time to also practise times tables at home. The children are tested weekly with our RAPS challenge. By the end of Year 4, children should know their 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 times tables.

We are using the International Primary Curriculum at RAPS which is “an engaging, rigorous and internationally minded thematic approach to learning”. This is an exciting change and will allow children to learn with real purpose and to make clear links between subjects. A number of different units will be studied throughout the year and these will last for different amounts of time (and will therefore not last the entire term as in previous years). Using the IPC means that children will not study every subject, every week. Areas of learning are blocked, so one block of lessons may focus on Science before moving on to a block on Geography and then Art etc. Having started this term with exploring our School Values, British Values and why it is good to be yourself, we will be moving onto a new IPC topic, ‘Scavengers and Settlers’, which focuses on the past and what our ancestors did in the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages.

PE will be taught as part of the Arts Curriculum and there will be two sessions a week as well as a separate Dance session. The sport covered will change each term.

It is important that children have a full PE kit in school at all times. This includes black or blue shorts and white t-shirt for indoor PE and black or blue jogging bottoms, sweatshirt or tracksuit top and suitable trainers or plimsolls for outdoor lessons. The weather has to be severely inclement for lessons not to go ahead, so please ensure that your child is well equipped! During the entire term the children will continue with their swimming sessions at Upton on Fridays except on the last Friday. The class will continue to look at cricket this term, with a focus on the key skills of batting, bowling and fielding.

At various points in the year swimming lessons take place across the school. An information letter will be sent home when this arises for each year group involved.

Home Learning

Home Learning and weekly news will now be communicated through one document that will be uploaded onto our blog. Curriculum and IPC information will also appear in these letters when relevant. All home learning should be completed and returned to school as advised on the newsletter.

Home learning will change as the children progress through the school so that it is both suitable for their age and also prepares them for the next steps in their school life. This year, the children will receive a ‘Love to Learn’ challenge every three weeks. This will be based on something they have been learning at school and should be used to reinforce this learning at home with you. We try to cater for all learning styles and try to provide an open task that can be tackled through a variety of media. In the previous terms, some children chose to write, type, draw, act, or even film their various ‘Love to Learn’ tasks.

Our school uniform exists both for health and safety reasons and to develop a sense of pride and responsibility in being a member of the Ramsgate Arts Primary School community.  The uniform policy  includes the expectation that all children will wear black school shoes (trainers are not acceptable footwear), that long hair should be tied back at all times and that with the exception of a watch and a pair of small stud earrings NO jewellery may be worn by children. We also ask you to remember that children should not be wearing make-up or nail varnish to school and hair styles should not be extreme – this includes unnatural hair colours.  The school’s uniform policy is listed in the school’s prospectus and if you would like another copy, please ask at the school office.  Please ensure your child is dressed according to this policy and that all items of clothing are clearly named.

General Messages

Sipping water throughout the day aids concentration and learning. Please provide your child with a water bottle which they may keep with them throughout the day. Ensure that these are named to avoid confusion.

It is vital that pupils arrive at school on time and that absence is kept to a minimum.  Frequent lateness and absences can have a huge negative impact on a child’s learning so please have your child in school by 8.20am every day.

Thank you.

Miss Amin
