Power of Reading in Team Piper

Looking Closely at Illustrations...
Team Piper have started Power of Reading today for this term and we are already so impressed with the children’s thinking and ideas.
We have not looked at the book cover or the title yet. Instead, we began by responding to an illustration. The children were shown the final page of the book and we spent time looking closely for big clues. We asked questions such as: What can you see? What do you think is happening in the picture? This encouraged the children to observe carefully, talk about details and share their own interpretations.
We then focused on the main character, Astrid. The children were asked what they noticed about her and whether she has a family like them. We talked about what is the same between them and Astrid, and what might be different. This helped the children to make personal connections and think about characters as real people with feelings, families and experiences.
This type of discussion is really important as it supports children’s language development, listening skills and confidence in speaking. It also helps them to build empathy, understand different perspectives and become active, thoughtful readers before even opening the story itself.
We are so proud of the thoughtful ideas Team Piper shared and can’t wait to explore the story further together.
