This week we learnt about firefighters, lifeguards and the coastguard. We did some amazing science experiments alongside the lessons. We predicted which materials would put out a fire and then tested them. Water and Sand were the clear winners but ask your child about which materials didn't work (paper and wood) and which object was surprisingly effective (a tiny frying pan from our home corner!). Our second experiment involved testing whether objects float or sink. A surprising amount of objects floated, even our good friend the plastic bear floated which surprised all the children and staff who predicted it would sink. Thankfully our much loved black stone came to save the day; sinking impressively. This allowed the class lifeguard (one of the children's colour changing plastic toys) to dive in and save the poor stone, allowing it to be used once again to represent numbers in maths!

(Due to the high octane, high pressure scientific environment, we forgot to document these experiments).

This week we looked at positional language and the number 4 and 5. We learnt lots of words relating to positional language and played lots of games where either our good friend, Fred the frog, our good friend the plastic bear, or the children themselves moved around learning the words. We did lots of counting and subitising and also represented 4 and 5 in many ways. My favourite was drawing an animal with 4 legs and labelling the legs.

  • Phonics set one sounds

    Published 07/11/22, by Admin

We have made a great start in our English lessons this term. We are following Read Write Inc. and the children have now split up in to smaller groups for the lessons. I spoke to many parents about how good it is to practise the set 1 sounds at home and some parents have asked for resources for relatives. We posted a blog before which includes a lot of resources and in this post is a higher resolution copy of the set one sounds along with their rhymes. Below is also a video of a short introduction video and a video which shows viewers how to say the sounds.

  • Our Heroes

    Published 01/11/22, by Admin

Today we started our new topic for the term: Our Heroes. We introduced the topic and what Our heroes means (a person admired for great deeds or fine qualities) and discussed the heroes in our life and community. The children had some great hero examples, and we talked about family, friends, emergency service staff, postal service staff, shop assistants and pets! We also read My Dad is Brilliant, and My Mum is Brilliant by Nick Butterworth.

  • 1, 2, 3 in maths

Today we looked in depth at the numbers 1, 2, 3. We clapped out the numbers, counted on our fingers, counted loose parts and then looked at the numerals. The children made some amazing posters and focussed well on the table and carpet activities. Mr O'neill also took some children on a number hunt in the outside space. See if you can spot the numbers 1, 2 and 3 represented in public, you could count trees, cars, trains, the moon...anything.

  • Oral storytelling!

    Published 01/11/22, by Admin

We created another genre bending, truly original, incredibly amazing story today. Monster and his friend, the teddy unicorn, were incredibly hungry. To their dismay the cupcake factory was shut, but they had heard an amazing rumour that there was something tasty hidden in the castle. Ask your children to tell you the story and explain what my (practically indecipherable) drawings actually are!

The children came in to school today with some amazing hairstyles and spooky costumes. One child's transformation was so spectacular that no teachers recognised him at first! The children had a monster mash party in sport and then a little party in the class before home time to celebrate all the class marbles we have collected for amazing collective group work (the class favourites 'we will rock you' and 'eye of the tiger' were on heavy rotation). Hopefully the children also informed you about my venture into vegetable based headwear!

  • Diversity with Miss Spurrier

The teachers swapped classes during one topic lesson this week. Miss Spurrier taught green room one of our 'Values' lessons in topic this week. The children learnt about Beryl the Butterly, specifically about diversity and how our differences and similarities make us interesting and unique. The children also read the book 'All Are Welcome' which taught us that everyone, no matter their similarities or differences, are welcome in our classroom.

  • Patterns in maths

    Published 21/10/22, by Admin

In maths, we have been learning about patterns and made our own patterns during the week. We started by listening to music and copying the patterns within the music. The children loved joining in with 'we will rock you' by Queen. We then made patterns with objects and pens and paper. The children went on to make patterns with multiple different objects and materials and very much enjoyed spotting and pointing out the 'mistakes' I had foolishly made in my own patterns :)
