Team Piper’s Maths: Counting with Confidence!

Today in Team Piper, we got hands-on with numbers and had lots of fun along the way!
Working in pairs, the children picked a pot of counters and used ten frames to help organise and count how many they had. Ten frames are a brilliant visual tool that supports children in recognising numbers in groups of ten, helping them understand number structure and place value.
Our focus was on Step 5: Verbally counting beyond 20. It was fantastic to hear the children confidently counting aloud into the twenties and even beyond. Using the ten frames, they were able to see the pattern in how each group of ten builds into the next set of numbers.
💬 “I can verbally count beyond 20!”
💡 “I know there is a structure with each 10.”
These comments show just how much the children are beginning to grasp the structure of our number system, setting them up for even more success in their maths learning.
Well done, Team Piper—what amazing mathematicians you are!
